Gallon
House Bridge
Erected in 1916, Gallon House Bridge got its name from an
era in which the town on one side, Silverton, was "dry,"
but the town across Abiqua Creek, Mt. Angel, was "wet."
Thirst-quenching transactions were made on the Mt. Angel side,
it is told. It is located just northwest of Silverton. Take
Highway 214 north about half a mile to Hobart Road. Turn to
the west and after one mile turn right on Gallon House Road
and proceed about a half-mile.
Mt.
Angel Abbey
The high butte on the north side of Abiqua Creek is said to
have once been the site of the Abiqua Indians' religious shrine
called Topolamahoh. Today the hilltop is home to the Mt. Angel
Abbey, where mass is held during the week at 8 a.m. and 9
a.m. on Sunday, with Vespers held daily at 5:15 p.m. People
come from all over the world to attend the seminary, and the
library, designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, is open
to the public daily 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. and 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.
Sunday - Thursday. There are two museums, both with free admission.
Both the Russian museum and the natural museum are open 10
- 11:30 a.m. and 1 - 5 p.m. daily.
Cooley's
Iris Gardens
1 1/2 miles west of Silverton on Hwy 213, Cooleys is
the world's largest iris grower. Since 1928, the family legacy
has grown from a backyard hobby to over 250 acres of irises.
Extensive display gardens at Cooley's are open to the public
free of charge along with an equipment display and an indoor
feature of iris arrangements. The gardens are open daily 8
a.m. - 7 p.m. during peak bloom, usually mid-May - mid-June.

Silverton Country Museum
Jam-packed with artifacts documenting the history of Silverton,
the museum is open Thursday and Sunday 1 - 4 p.m. at 428 S.

Brush Creek Playhouse
A small community theater 1 1/2 miles west of Silverton next
door to Cooley's Gardens at 11500 Silverton Road, Brush Creek
Playhouses productions feature local citizens young

Overfield Covered Pedestrian Bridge
Built in 2000 by Silverton businessman Mike Overfield, the
footbridge spans Silver Creek from Town Square Park to downtown
Silverton. It has wheelchair access from the park side and
benches and fishing rod holders at its midpoint. It is located
upstream from the Main Street auto bridge. |
