An
Introduction to Silverton
Silverton is located in Marion County, Oregon, fifteen minutes
from Salem, the state capital, along Highway 213. Founded
in 1854, the settlement boasted several lumber mills driven
by Silver Creek. The town was incorporated in 1885. Despite
the name of the city and the creek, silver was never mined
near Silverton.
Visitors enjoy the town's extensive art collection,
from massive murals painted
on walls and buildings throughout the historic downtown to
a thriving community of galleries. Fine dining and family
fare are available throughout the downtown area, while antique
and curio shops offer destinations for collectors and gift-seekers.
Many people come to see The Oregon
Garden, a 60-acre botanical garden still 'growing' to
its final 240+ acre size. The Garden features thousands of
plantsin over 20 specialty gardens, including Northwest native
or grown specimens ranging from conifers to crocus. The Garden
also hosts outdoor summer concerts and is a popular venue
for wedding celebrations. Architecture buffs enjoy tours of
the Gordon House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright on part of
The Garden's grounds.
Silver Falls State Park lures
outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy 14 miles of horseback riding
trails, four miles of paved cycling trails, and many miles
of hiking trails. The Trail of Ten Falls (or Canyon Trail)
passes ten waterfalls in varying shapes and sizes, including
the 177-foot South Falls. Camping areas, cabins and RV services
are available, and the Silver Falls Conference Center offers
the perfect retreat for family or business.
A variety of festivals, including
the Silverton Fine Art Festival, Homer Davenport Days and
the nearby Mt. Angel Oktoberfest, offer seasonal guests additional
recreational opportunities.
